Exercise – activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness.
When you hear the word exercise, do you jump for joy or roll your eyes and leave the room? If you are the person who rolls their eyes and leaves the room, ask yourself why you have this reaction. Exercise isn’t something everyone enjoys and that’s totally fine, the media around the fitness industry is enough to scare newbies off. Images of seemingly “perfect” people in tight expensive sports gears, eek right?
How can we reframe the way we think of exercise, lets start by changing the word exercise, replacing it with movement. I like to think that most of us like to move our bodies or I hope so, if your not sure then experiment and find an activity that suits you.
Increase the amount movement in your day, the easiest way to do this is by walking more, can you walk for 30 minutes per day? Grab a friend and have a walking date, walk the dogs, check out a new beach, walk to work; walking is a simple way of increasing your daily activity. It’s a no brainer, its free and you can do it with or without lycra. Bonus!
Try different activities to see what you enjoy. Pick anything, seriously, if you want to hula hoop on a stand up paddle board I’m sure there will be a class out there for you. Pick something new, grab a friend, go and have a laugh. Moving your body, connecting and laughing at the same time. Tick, tick, tick.
It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, whether you think you are uncoordinated or don’t have any balance give it a go. If that actiivty doesn’t work for you, try another. Moving is about having fun, increasing your confidence and meeting new people, along the way you will get fitter and stronger.
Movement benefits both physical and mental health. By moving more you will notice that your sleep improves, your energy levels increase, you will have less aches/pains, you feel more positive, you feel fitter and more capable.
